Aquarium Cichlids: Malawi, Tanganyika, Victoria & American Cichlids

Cichlids are among the most fascinating aquarium fish, renowned for their colours, behaviour and remarkable diversity. Native mainly to Africa and the Americas, they offer aquarists a wide range of possibilities, from rocky aquariums dedicated to African cichlids to large tanks housing American cichlids.

At NEOTROPIC, we select and breed different species of freshwater cichlids for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Our selection includes Lake Malawi cichlids, Lake Tanganyika cichlids, species from Lake Victoria, as well as various American cichlids.

Lake Malawi cichlids

Malawi cichlids are particularly popular for their spectacular colours. Blue, yellow, orange or multicoloured, some species display colours comparable to marine fish while living exclusively in freshwater.

The famous Mbuna mainly inhabit the rocky areas of Lake Malawi. They are generally kept in aquariums providing plenty of rocks, hiding places and territories. Other groups, including Haplochromines and Aulonocara, can be used to create particularly colourful African cichlid aquariums.

Lake Tanganyika cichlids

Lake Tanganyika is home to an extraordinary diversity of cichlids with highly specialised behaviours. Some species inhabit rocky areas, while others use empty snail shells as shelters and breeding sites.

Tanganyika cichlids are particularly appreciated by enthusiasts interested in observing complex territorial, social and breeding behaviours.

Lake Victoria cichlids

Lake Victoria cichlids and species from the surrounding basins include many fish known for their beautiful colours, particularly adult males.

As some species have become rare in their natural habitats, aquarium breeding can also contribute to maintaining captive populations.

American cichlids

American cichlids include fish originating from Central and South America. Their diversity is considerable, with colours, sizes, behaviour and requirements varying greatly between species.

They include cichlids suitable for carefully planned community aquariums as well as territorial species requiring large tanks and carefully selected tank mates.

What aquarium do cichlids need?

The choice of aquarium depends primarily on the species and its adult size. Water parameters, decoration, available space and tank mates must all be adapted to the specific requirements of the fish.

For African Rift Lake cichlids, rocky décor providing numerous hiding places is often preferred. American cichlids may require very different aquarium layouts depending on their origin and behaviour.

Before choosing your fish, it is important to check the compatibility between different cichlid species, their adult size and the minimum recommended aquarium volume.
