Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrates (Shrimp, Crayfish, Snails, Crabs)

Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrates

Freshwater aquarium invertebrates include a wide variety of species with very different behaviours, colours and lifestyles. Shrimp, crayfish, crabs and snails can add a new dimension to a freshwater aquarium and, for some species, provide an interesting alternative to fish.

Choosing an invertebrate should not be based on appearance alone. Each species has its own requirements regarding water quality, temperature, diet, aquarium layout and compatibility with fish and other invertebrates.

Freshwater Aquarium Shrimp

Aquarium shrimp are among the most popular freshwater invertebrates. Neocaridina are particularly appreciated for their wide range of colours and their relatively straightforward care requirements.

Red Sakura, Blue Velvet, Yellow Fire and other varieties of Neocaridina davidi can form beautiful colourful colonies when kept under suitable aquarium conditions.

Other freshwater shrimp species may have very different requirements. It is therefore important to check the specific needs of each species before introducing them into your aquarium.

Freshwater Aquarium Crayfish

Freshwater aquarium crayfish are fascinating invertebrates known for their behaviour and distinctive appearance. Some smaller species, particularly dwarf crayfish of the genus Cambarellus, can be kept in reasonably sized aquariums.

Their compatibility with fish, shrimp and other invertebrates depends on the species and the aquarium conditions. Providing suitable hiding places is particularly important, especially during moulting.

Freshwater Aquarium Crabs

Freshwater crabs are unusual aquarium inhabitants with behaviours and requirements that vary considerably between species.

Some species require a carefully designed aquarium with appropriate hiding places and specific water conditions. Their compatibility with fish and other invertebrates should always be checked before introduction.

Our product pages provide the information needed to choose a freshwater aquarium crab suited to your setup.

Freshwater Aquarium Snails

Aquarium snails include many species with different colours, sizes and behaviours. They can be kept in many freshwater aquariums provided that their specific requirements are respected.

Depending on the species, snails may feed on algae, biofilm, leftover food or other food sources. Some species have very specific diets and should therefore be selected according to the conditions available in the aquarium.

How to Choose Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrates

Before choosing an invertebrate, consider the aquarium size, water temperature, pH, hardness, diet, adult size and behaviour of the species.

Compatibility is also essential. Shrimp, crayfish, crabs, snails and fish do not necessarily have the same requirements, and some combinations may not be suitable.

Always check the requirements of each species before introducing new animals into an established aquarium.
