A Mix of Colourful Shrimp for a Lively Aquarium

Would you like to easily add colour to your aquarium? Our Neocaridina davidi mix brings together different freshwater shrimp selected from the colours available when your order is prepared.

Red, orange, yellow, blue, black, green or other shades: the composition of the mix may vary depending on availability, creating a colourful and varied group.

These small shrimp are particularly enjoyable to observe. Always busy exploring plants, roots, stones and the aquarium floor, they quickly add activity and colour to a planted aquarium.

This mixed-colour shrimp pack is particularly suitable for aquarists who want to enjoy several different colours without having to choose one specific variety.

What Colours Can Be Found in the Mix?

Our Neocaridina shrimp mix is made up of several colour varieties available from our breeding and selection stocks when your order is prepared.

Depending on availability, the mix may include red, yellow, orange, blue, tiger-patterned, green shrimp or individuals displaying other patterns and colours.

The exact composition and proportion of each colour may vary from one pack to another. The photographs illustrate the type of mix offered but do not guarantee the exact composition of the pack received.

Each order therefore retains the fun and variety of a genuine assortment of colourful aquarium shrimp.

Shrimp Suitable for Beginners

Neocaridina davidi are among the most popular freshwater aquarium shrimp, particularly because they are relatively easy to keep.

They can adapt to a range of conditions provided that the aquarium is properly cycled and the water parameters remain stable.

What Aquarium Is Suitable for Mixed Colour Shrimp?

Mixed-colour Neocaridina shrimp are particularly well suited to planted aquariums.

Mosses, plants, roots, stones and leaves create a natural environment in which shrimp can constantly explore and search for food.

These surfaces also encourage the development of biofilm and micro-organisms on which Neocaridina naturally feed.

Dense vegetation also provides numerous hiding places for juvenile shrimp.

Neocaridina can be kept in nano aquariums, but a biologically stable aquarium should always be prioritised over trying to keep them in the smallest possible volume.

What Do Neocaridina Shrimp Eat?

Neocaridina davidi are omnivorous and detritivorous.

In a mature aquarium, they spend much of the day consuming biofilm, certain microalgae, micro-organisms and small amounts of organic matter found on aquarium surfaces.

Food specifically formulated for shrimp can supplement their natural diet and provide nutrients required for growth, moulting and reproduction.

It is preferable to feed small quantities and avoid overfeeding in order to maintain good water quality.

Do Shrimp Clean the Aquarium?

Neocaridina naturally contribute to the consumption of biofilm, certain microalgae and small organic debris.

Their constant activity on plants, roots, stones and substrate makes them useful inhabitants of a balanced aquarium.

However, they should not be purchased solely as aquarium “cleaners”. They are animals in their own right and require appropriate food and suitable living conditions.

They also do not replace water changes, filtration or regular aquarium maintenance.

Can These Shrimp Be Kept with Fish?

Neocaridina are completely peaceful and pose no danger to fish.

However, many fish may consider small shrimp to be food. Juvenile shrimp are particularly vulnerable.

In a community aquarium, choose peaceful fish and provide dense vegetation and plenty of hiding places.

If your aim is to quickly establish a large shrimp population, a dedicated shrimp aquarium remains the safest option.

Will Mixed Colour Shrimp Reproduce?

Yes. The different colours included in this mix all belong to Neocaridina davidi and can therefore reproduce with one another.

Reproduction takes place entirely in freshwater. Females carry their eggs beneath the abdomen until they hatch, producing tiny fully formed juvenile shrimp.

An aquarium rich in mosses and vegetation improves the chances of juvenile survival. A fine sponge fitted over the filter intake is also recommended.

Will the Babies Keep the Same Colours?

This is an important point to understand before buying a mixed-colour Neocaridina pack.

When several different colour lines are mixed and reproduce with one another, their offspring will not necessarily retain the colours of their parents.

The first generations may display different colours and patterns, but over successive generations less intensely coloured, brown, transparent or more wild-type individuals may appear.

If your aim is to maintain and selectively breed a specific colour, it is preferable to choose a single Neocaridina variety and keep it separately.

However, if you simply want a lively, natural and colourful aquarium without a selective breeding objective, the mix is an excellent option.

Why Choose a Neocaridina Mix?

The main advantage of a mix is its simplicity: there is no need to choose between red, blue, yellow, orange, green or black shrimp.

It allows you to introduce several colours into the aquarium at once and is an excellent way to discover the behaviour of freshwater shrimp.

It is also a particularly interesting choice for a first shrimp aquarium, a family aquarium or simply for aquarists who prefer enjoying a variety of colours rather than maintaining a particular selectively bred line.

How Many Shrimp Should Be Kept in an Aquarium?

Neocaridina benefit from the presence of other shrimp. To fully enjoy their behaviour and help establish a population, it is preferable to introduce them as a group rather than individually.

Once properly acclimatised and established in a suitable environment, they generally become much more visible and spend their day exploring the entire aquarium.

If both males and females are present and conditions are favourable, the population can then increase naturally through reproduction.
