Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold – 10 to 12 cm

Price: €19.50

The Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold, currently classified under the scientific name Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps, is a large South American loricariid offered here in a yellow to golden-coloured Gold form.

Its sucker-shaped mouth allows it to hold onto surfaces. It spends much of its time exploring the bottom, roots, rocks and aquarium glass.

The specimens offered are approximately 10 to 12 cm. However, this is a large loricariid and can grow to several tens of centimetres as an adult in an aquarium. Sufficient space should therefore be planned from the outset to accommodate its growth.

Recommended parameters: temperature 23 to 27 °C – pH 6 to 8 – soft to moderately hard water.

Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold

The Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold is a yellow to golden-coloured form of the large South American loricariid currently classified under the scientific name Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps.

The name Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps is still widely used in the aquarium trade, although the species is now classified within the genus Pterygoplichthys.

Its robust body, large dorsal fin and sucker-shaped mouth make it a particularly distinctive fish.

The specimens offered here are approximately 10 to 12 cm.

Adult Size

Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps is a large loricariid. In an aquarium, it can grow to several tens of centimetres as an adult, with the actual size reached varying between individuals and according to their keeping conditions.

The maximum recorded size for the species can approach 50 cm, although this does not mean that every individual will reach this size in an aquarium.

Its growth should nevertheless be anticipated: a specimen sold at 10 or 12 cm can become considerably larger over the years.

What Size Aquarium Does Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold Need?

The aquarium should be suitable for the fish as it grows. Floor space and sufficient room to move become particularly important as the fish increases in size.

The aquarium can be furnished with roots, rocks and suitably sized hiding places while retaining open areas for the fish to move around.

Efficient filtration is also important, as a large loricariid can produce a considerable amount of waste.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 23 to 27 °C
pH: 6 to 8
Hardness: approximately 5 to 19 °dGH
Nitrite: 0 mg/L

Nitrite should remain undetectable. Efficient filtration, good oxygenation and regular water changes help maintain good water quality.

Feeding Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold

Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold spends much of its time exploring and grazing on the various surfaces within the aquarium.

In the aquarium, its diet should be varied and complete. It can be offered sinking pellets and tablets suitable for loricariids, together with foods containing a plant-based component.

Algae and biofilm naturally present in the aquarium can contribute to its diet, but they are not sufficient to meet all of its nutritional requirements.

It should therefore not be regarded simply as a “cleaner fish”. Suitable food must be provided regularly.

Behaviour and Compatibility

Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold is generally relatively peaceful towards other fish.

As it grows, territorial behaviour may occur towards other large loricariids, particularly around hiding places and feeding areas.

It is not necessary to keep this species in a group. Keeping several large individuals together requires additional space and hiding places.

Breeding

Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps is an egg-laying fish.

In its natural habitat, breeding is associated with cavities or burrows. Reproduction remains uncommon in domestic aquariums.

Origin

Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps is native to South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco river basins.

The Gold form available in the aquarium trade has a yellow to golden colouration that differs from the typical wild form.

Lifespan

Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold can live for more than 10 years when provided with suitable conditions.

Its growth and lifespan should therefore both be taken into account before purchasing this fish.

Conservation Status

Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps is listed as LC – Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild

Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps Gold must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
