Black Neon Tetra – Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi

The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a small South American tetra appreciated for its elegant and contrasting colouration. A broad black horizontal stripe runs along the body beneath a bright silvery-white line, while the upper part of the eye displays a distinctive reddish marking.

The specimens offered here are approximately 2 to 2.5 cm.

Adult Size

The Black Neon Tetra generally reaches around 4 to 5 cm as an adult.

Water Parameters

This species appreciates clean, stable freshwater that is soft to moderately mineralised.

Temperature: 23 to 27 °C
pH: 5.5 to 7.5
Nitrite: 0 mg/L

Nitrite should remain undetectable. Good filtration and regular water changes help maintain suitable conditions for the shoal.

What Size Aquarium for Black Neon Tetras?

An aquarium of approximately 60 litres or more provides a suitable basis for keeping a small shoal. A longer and more spacious aquarium is even better for a larger group.

A planted aquarium with open swimming areas is particularly suitable for this active species.

Behaviour and Shoaling

The Black Neon Tetra is a peaceful and highly sociable fish that should not be kept alone.

A shoal of at least 10 individuals is recommended. When aquarium size allows, a larger group encourages more natural behaviour and creates a particularly attractive display.

Feeding

In the wild, the Black Neon Tetra feeds on small invertebrates and other tiny food organisms.

In the aquarium, it readily accepts suitably sized micro-pellets and finely crushed flakes, as well as small frozen or live foods such as Artemia and Daphnia.

Breeding

The Black Neon Tetra is an egg-laying fish. The eggs are scattered amongst fine vegetation or over the substrate.

Breeding in the aquarium is possible under suitable conditions. Soft water and a dedicated breeding aquarium can help improve the survival of eggs and fry.

Origin

Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi originates from South America, particularly the upper Paraguay River basin in Brazil.

Lifespan

The Black Neon Tetra can live for approximately 5 years, and sometimes longer, when kept under suitable aquarium conditions.

Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild

Black Neon Tetras must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
