The Caridina sp. Snow Zebra is a particularly distinctive freshwater shrimp, easily recognised by its pale to whitish colouration with contrasting patterns and bands reminiscent of zebra stripes. This rare shrimp, sold among Sulawesi-type shrimp, immediately stands out in the aquarium. Peaceful and active, it thrives in mature aquariums rich in biofilm and with highly stable water parameters.

Caridina sp. Snow Zebra: a Shrimp with Spectacular Markings

The Caridina sp. Snow Zebra, generally sold under the name Sulawesi Snow Zebra, has an appearance that is very different from more traditional aquarium shrimp.

Its body displays pale, whitish to translucent tones combined with darker contrasting bands that create a distinctive zebra-like pattern. The intensity of the white colouration, arrangement of the bands and underlying shades can vary between individuals.

This natural variation gives a colony plenty of character, as each Snow Zebra may display a slightly different pattern.

The scientific identification used in the aquarium trade is not entirely consistent. Some sources simply use Caridina sp., while others associate the Snow Zebra with Caridina caerulea. It is therefore more appropriate to retain the name Caridina sp. Snow Zebra when the precise identification of the strain has not been formally documented.

An important characteristic distinguishes our Snow Zebra from many typical Sulawesi shrimp: the NeoTropic line is kept under conditions similar to those used for our Neocaridina davidi.

Some Snow Zebra strains are kept in typical warm, alkaline Sulawesi-type water at around 27–28°C and pH 8–8.4, while some captive-bred lines have been acclimatised to conditions much closer to those commonly used for Neocaridina.

Snow Zebra Care Depends on the Strain

With this shrimp, it is particularly important to know the breeding conditions of the actual strain.

Some specialist breeders keep their Snow Zebra Shrimp in warm, alkaline Sulawesi-type water. At NeoTropic, we offer a line that has been bred for several generations under conditions similar to those used for Neocaridina.

It is therefore preferable not to alter aquarium water suddenly in an attempt to achieve a theoretical parameter value.

The priority should be careful acclimatisation and stable water parameters.

Knowing the conditions in which the shrimp were previously kept makes it easier to prepare their new aquarium. The Snow Zebra offered by NeoTropic can be kept with Neocaridina davidi when aquarium conditions are suitable for both, without the risk of hybridisation between them.

A Distinctive White and Zebra-Like Pattern

The Snow Zebra takes its name from its characteristic markings.

The body may display translucent to pale areas combined with contrasting bands. Some lines may also show slightly bluish tones beneath the lighter areas.

The exact distribution of colour naturally varies between individuals.

Some shrimp display particularly well-defined bands, while others have a more diffuse pattern.

These differences are normal and contribute to the visual appeal of this shrimp. A Snow Zebra colony will not necessarily consist of perfectly identical individuals.

What Aquarium Is Suitable for Snow Zebra Shrimp?

The Caridina sp. Snow Zebra benefits above all from a mature and biologically stable aquarium.

Stones, roots, mosses and other natural elements provide numerous surfaces on which biofilm, microalgae and micro-organisms can develop.

These natural resources are particularly important for shrimp that spend much of their day exploring surfaces in search of food.

Darker areas within the aquarium can also provide an attractive contrast that highlights the white markings of the Snow Zebra.

Filtration should be effective without creating dangerous suction for juvenile shrimp. A sponge filter or fine guard fitted over the filter intake is particularly suitable.

Feeding Caridina Snow Zebra Shrimp

The Snow Zebra is omnivorous and spends much of its time grazing on the different surfaces available in the aquarium.

Biofilm and micro-organisms form an important part of the natural food resources available in a mature aquarium. Food specifically formulated for freshwater shrimp can be used to supplement this diet.

A varied diet provided in small quantities is preferable.

Overfeeding should be avoided, as an accumulation of uneaten food can reduce water quality and may be particularly problematic for shrimp.

Why Is a Mature Aquarium Important?

A mature aquarium is about more than simply having suitable water parameters.

Over time, numerous micro-organisms and a natural biofilm colonise stones, substrate and other aquarium surfaces.

Snow Zebra Shrimp constantly explore these surfaces to collect tiny food particles.

This environment is even more important for juvenile shrimp, whose small size limits their feeding opportunities.

A newly established aquarium is therefore less suitable than a biologically mature and stable aquarium.

Breeding Snow Zebra Shrimp

The Caridina sp. Snow Zebra can reproduce entirely in freshwater when conditions are suitable.

Females carry their eggs beneath the abdomen during development. After hatching, the young emerge as tiny, fully formed shrimp. Their reproductive development is therefore comparable in this respect to that of Neocaridina davidi.

No compulsory brackish-water stage comparable to the reproductive cycle of the Amano Shrimp is required. Specialist breeders report successful and regular reproduction of Snow Zebra populations in aquariums.

Juvenile shrimp particularly benefit from an aquarium rich in biofilm and containing numerous small hiding places.

Stable water parameters remain essential during this period.

Keeping Snow Zebra Shrimp with Fish

The Snow Zebra is a peaceful shrimp and poses no danger to fish.

The reverse is not necessarily true.

Many fish may prey on small shrimp, particularly juveniles.

To fully enjoy this variety and encourage successful breeding, a dedicated shrimp aquarium therefore remains the safest option.

Snails and other peaceful invertebrates requiring compatible water parameters can make suitable tank mates.

Can Snow Zebra and Neocaridina Be Kept Together?

Our Snow Zebra line is bred under conditions similar to those used for Neocaridina and can therefore technically share the same aquarium when the requirements of both populations are compatible.

Another advantage is that Caridina and Neocaridina are not simply different colour varieties of the same Neocaridina davidi species. Their appearance is also noticeably different.

Snow Zebra and Neocaridina do not hybridise with one another, allowing both types of shrimp to be kept together without losing their respective selected colour lines through crossbreeding.

However, the requirements of the actual strain being purchased should always take priority over choosing water parameters solely according to the other shrimp already present in the aquarium.

For selective breeding and to fully observe the behaviour of Snow Zebra Shrimp, a dedicated aquarium remains preferable.

Snow Zebra vs Traditional Aquarium Shrimp

The Snow Zebra is an excellent alternative for aquarists who already keep Red Cherry, Sakura, Blue Velvet, Yellow Fire or other Neocaridina and are looking for something visually very different.

Its appeal does not come from uniform colouration.

Instead, it is the contrast between the pale areas and zebra-like markings that gives this shrimp its distinctive appearance.

It can therefore be an interesting way to discover other Caridina without simply choosing another red, yellow, blue or green selectively bred shrimp.

Buy Caridina sp. Snow Zebra Shrimp Online

With its distinctive white zebra-like pattern, the Caridina sp. Snow Zebra is a particularly unusual shrimp for freshwater invertebrate enthusiasts.

Its small size, peaceful behaviour and, above all, its unusual appearance make it very different from traditional Neocaridina varieties.

NeoTropic offers Caridina sp. Snow Zebra Shrimp for sale online, selected for freshwater aquariums.

Because breeding conditions can differ significantly between strains, careful and progressive acclimatisation is particularly recommended when introducing them to their new aquarium.

Never release aquarium shrimp into the natural environment.
