Xenotoca eiseni – Mexican Livebearing Goodeid

Xenotoca eiseni is a freshwater fish belonging to the Goodeidae family and native to Mexico. The species is particularly interesting for its truly viviparous reproductive biology and the noticeable differences between adult males and females.

Adult males display the most striking colouration, with bluish tones and orange to orange-red colouration towards the rear of the body. Females are generally more subdued, with silvery to greyish colouration.

The specimens offered here are approximately 2 to 3 cm.

Adult Size

Xenotoca eiseni is a moderately sized fish. Adult size can vary according to sex and individual, with females capable of becoming as large as, and often more robust than, males.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 20 to 26 °C
pH: 7 to 8.5
Hardness: moderately hard to hard water
Nitrite: 0 mg/L

Nitrite should remain undetectable. Clean, stable and properly filtered water is recommended.

What Size Aquarium for Xenotoca eiseni?

Xenotoca eiseni is an active fish and benefits from an aquarium providing a good length of swimming space, particularly when several individuals are kept together.

Dense planted areas and other sheltered spaces allow individuals to retreat when necessary, while open areas should also be provided for swimming.

Behaviour and Group Keeping

This species can be quite lively, with noticeable interactions between individuals. When both sexes are kept together, it is preferable to keep several females for each male.

Tank mates should be selected carefully. Very calm or timid species and fish with long, flowing fins may not be the most suitable companions.

Feeding

Xenotoca eiseni is an omnivorous species. In the wild, its diet may include plant material, algae, small invertebrates and larvae.

In the aquarium, it readily accepts pellets and flakes. A varied diet including a plant-based component as well as suitable frozen or live foods provides useful dietary variety.

Breeding

Xenotoca eiseni is a truly viviparous Goodeid. Unlike ovoviviparous livebearers such as Guppies and Mollies, its reproductive biology involves maternal nourishment of the developing embryos.

The female gives birth directly to relatively large, well-developed young which are able to begin feeding soon after birth.

Origin

Xenotoca eiseni originates from Mexico. Mexican Goodeids are a particularly interesting group of freshwater fishes, with several wild populations having undergone major declines or facing significant threats.

Lifespan

Under suitable aquarium conditions, Xenotoca eiseni can live for approximately 4 to 5 years.

Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild

Xenotoca eiseni must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
