Odessa Barb – Pethia padamya

The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) is a small cyprinid native to Myanmar, particularly appreciated in the aquarium hobby for the spectacular colouration developed by adult males.

This species was long associated with the Ticto Barb and was notably sold under the name Odessa Ticto Barb. It is now recognised as a distinct species under the scientific name Pethia padamya.

The specimens offered here are approximately 2.5 to 3 cm.

Colouration of the Odessa Barb

Juvenile Odessa Barbs are predominantly silver. Their characteristic colouration develops gradually as they grow.

In adults, sexual dimorphism becomes much more noticeable. Males develop a striking red to orange-red colouration along the flanks, accompanied by dark markings and more colourful fins.

Females generally remain more silver in appearance and display more subtle colouration. They may also develop a fuller body shape when mature.

Adult Size of the Odessa Barb

The Odessa Barb generally reaches approximately 5 to 6 cm as an adult.

Despite its relatively small size, it is an active fish that benefits from plenty of swimming space.

A Sociable Fish to Keep in a Group

The Odessa Barb is a sociable, shoaling fish that should be kept with several members of its own species.

Group living allows the fish to display their natural social interactions. It also provides an excellent opportunity to observe courtship behaviour and the differences in colouration between males and females.

What Size Aquarium Does an Odessa Barb Need?

An aquarium approximately 80 cm in length provides a good basis for keeping a group of Odessa Barbs.

An aquarium combining planted areas with open swimming space is particularly suitable for this species.

Vegetation provides sheltered areas while also creating an attractive contrast with the intense red colouration of adult males.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 16 to 25 °C
pH: 6.5 to 8.5
Hardness: approximately 5 to 20 °dGH
Nitrite: 0 mg/L

Nitrite should remain undetectable. Stable, properly filtered water and regular aquarium maintenance are essential.

The Odessa Barb tolerates relatively moderate temperatures and does not require water to be constantly maintained at 26 or 28 °C.

Feeding the Odessa Barb

Pethia padamya is omnivorous.

In its natural habitat, its diet includes small invertebrates, insects and other organisms, as well as plant material.

In the aquarium, it readily accepts pellets and flakes.

Its diet can be supplemented with Artemia, Daphnia, insect larvae and other suitable frozen or live foods.

A varied diet contributes to healthy development and helps the fish display their natural colouration.

Behaviour and Compatibility

The Odessa Barb is an active, lively and sociable fish. It can be kept in a community aquarium with species of compatible size, behaviour and water requirements.

Keeping several Odessa Barbs together is important to allow them to display their natural social behaviour.

Breeding the Odessa Barb

Pethia padamya is an egg-laying, egg-scattering fish.

Spawning can take place among fine-leaved plants and other suitable vegetation or spawning media.

The parents provide no parental care and may eat the eggs. To maximise the number of fry, the adults can therefore be removed after spawning.

Origin of the Odessa Barb

Pethia padamya is native to Myanmar. The species is notably known from the Ayeyarwady basin.

The name “Odessa” is linked to the history of this fish in the aquarium trade, where it was circulating before its official scientific description.

Odessa Barb or Odessa Ticto Barb?

The name Odessa Ticto Barb can still sometimes be encountered in the aquarium hobby. It originates from the former association of this fish with the Ticto Barb.

The Odessa Barb is now recognised as a distinct species: Pethia padamya. The former name “Odessa Ticto Barb” nevertheless remains useful for identifying the fish in older aquarium literature and trade names.

Lifespan

Under suitable aquarium conditions, the Odessa Barb can live for approximately 5 to 6 years.

Conservation Status

Pethia padamya is classified as DD – Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List.

This classification indicates that the available information is currently insufficient to accurately assess its risk of extinction.

Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild

Aquarium fish must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment, in order to protect natural ecosystems and wildlife.
