Kuhli Loach – Pangio kuhlii
The Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii) is a small Asian loach easily recognised by its very elongated, eel-like body. Its yellow to orange colouration is marked by broad dark brown to black vertical bands.
The specimens offered here are approximately 6 to 8 cm.
Adult Size
The Kuhli Loach can reach approximately 10 cm as an adult.
Water Parameters
The Kuhli Loach appreciates clean and stable water that is soft to moderately mineralised.
Temperature: 22 to 28 °C
pH: 6 to 8
KH: 5 to 15 °dKH
Nitrite: 0 mg/L
Nitrite should remain undetectable. Efficient filtration and regular water changes help maintain good water quality.
What Size Aquarium for Kuhli Loaches?
The Kuhli Loach spends most of its time close to the bottom. An aquarium at least 60 cm long provides a suitable basis for keeping a small group.
The substrate should preferably be fine and non-abrasive, particularly sand. Roots, leaves, rocks and other shelters provide hiding places where the fish can rest during the day.
Kuhli Loaches can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps. The aquarium should therefore be securely covered and filter intakes protected where necessary.
Behaviour and Group Keeping
The Kuhli Loach is a very peaceful and sociable fish. It often spends part of the day hidden and generally becomes more active as the lighting begins to fade.
It is preferable to keep at least 5 to 6 individuals. When kept in a group with plenty of hiding places, Kuhli Loaches are generally more confident and more likely to explore the aquarium.
Feeding
In the wild, the Kuhli Loach searches through the substrate for small invertebrates, larvae and various organic matter.
In the aquarium, it accepts sinking pellets and tablets suitable for bottom-dwelling fish, as well as small frozen or live foods.
The Kuhli Loach is not a “cleaner fish”: it requires a complete diet, and enough food must reach the bottom of the aquarium.
Breeding
The Kuhli Loach is an egg-laying fish. Breeding remains relatively uncommon and difficult to control in the home aquarium.
Eggs may be deposited amongst dense vegetation. The adults provide no parental care.
Origin
Kuhli Loaches of the genus Pangio originate from South-East Asia, where they inhabit areas rich in vegetation, fallen leaves and organic matter.
Lifespan
The Kuhli Loach can live for approximately 6 to 10 years in an aquarium when kept under suitable conditions.
Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild
Kuhli Loaches must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
