Colouration can vary considerably between individuals. The specimens offered are approximately 3 to 3.5 cm.

Adult Size

Female Guppies are generally larger and more robust than males. They can reach approximately 5 to 6 cm as adults.

Water Parameters

The Guppy is a relatively adaptable species that particularly appreciates moderately hard to hard water.

Temperature: 22 to 28 °C

KH: 5 to 15 °dKH
Nitrite: 0 mg/L

Nitrite should remain undetectable. Efficient filtration and regular water changes help maintain good water quality.

What Size Aquarium for Female Guppies?

Guppies are active and sociable fish. To keep several females in good conditions, it is preferable to provide a sufficiently spacious, planted aquarium with open areas for swimming.

An aquarium of approximately 50 to 60 litres or more provides a better basis for keeping a small group over the long term.

Behaviour

The Guppy is a sociable fish that can be kept with several of its own kind as well as other peaceful species with similar requirements.

An all-female group can be kept. However, a female that has previously been kept with males can store sperm and may produce several broods after being separated from them.

Feeding

The Guppy is omnivorous. In the wild, its diet includes small invertebrates, larvae, micro-organisms and some plant matter.

In the aquarium, a varied diet can consist of good-quality pellets or flakes, occasionally supplemented with suitably sized foods such as Artemia or Daphnia.

Breeding

The Guppy is a livebearing fish: females give birth directly to free-swimming fry.

Breeding is particularly easy in the aquarium. A female can give birth to several dozen fry depending on her age and size.

Dense vegetation provides additional hiding places for young fish.

Origin

Poecilia reticulata is native to northeastern South America and parts of the Caribbean. Guppies available in the aquarium trade are the result of many generations of selective breeding and occur in a very wide range of colours and fin shapes.

Lifespan

Guppies generally live for around 2 to 3 years in an aquarium, although this can vary between individuals and according to their keeping conditions.

Female and Male Guppies

Females are generally larger than males and have a fuller abdomen. Selectively bred females can nevertheless display attractive colouration and well-developed fins.

If males and females are kept together, breeding can be very frequent. It is therefore important to anticipate the potential increase in the aquarium population.

Never Release Guppies into the Wild

Guppies must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
