Red/Blue Japan Gold Male Guppy
The Red/Blue Japan Gold Male Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred variety particularly recognisable by its sky-blue colouration and red double-sword tail.
This combination of colours and distinctive tail shape gives it a particularly striking appearance. As with other selectively bred Guppy varieties, the intensity and distribution of the colours can naturally vary slightly between individuals.
The specimens offered here are approximately 2.5 to 3 cm.
Adult Size
Male Guppies remain relatively small and generally reach around 3 to 4 cm as adults, excluding particularly well-developed fins in some varieties.
Water Parameters
The Guppy is a relatively adaptable species that particularly appreciates moderately hard to hard water.
Temperature: 22 to 28 °C
pH: 7 to 8.5
KH: 5 to 15 °dKH
Nitrite: 0 mg/L
Nitrite should remain undetectable. Efficient filtration and regular water changes help maintain good water quality.
What Size Aquarium for Male Guppies?
Guppies are active and sociable fish. A planted aquarium with open areas for swimming is particularly suitable for them.
For keeping several individuals in good conditions over the long term, an aquarium of approximately 50 to 60 litres or more provides a good basis.
Behaviour and Compatibility
The Guppy is a sociable fish that can live with other peaceful species with similar requirements.
Several males can be kept together when the aquarium provides sufficient space. If males and females are kept together, it is preferable to keep several females for each male to reduce repeated attention towards individual females.
Feeding
The Guppy is omnivorous. In the wild, its diet includes small invertebrates, larvae, micro-organisms and some plant matter.
In the aquarium, a varied diet can consist of good-quality pellets or flakes, occasionally supplemented with suitably sized foods such as Artemia or Daphnia.
Breeding
The Guppy is a livebearing fish. After fertilisation, the female gives birth directly to free-swimming fry.
Breeding is particularly easy in the aquarium. When males and females are kept together, a rapid increase in population should therefore be anticipated.
Females can also store sperm and may produce several broods after being separated from males.
Origin
Poecilia reticulata is native to northeastern South America and parts of the Caribbean.
The Red/Blue Japan Gold Guppy available in the aquarium trade is selectively bred. Its sky-blue colouration, red markings and distinctive tail shape are the result of this selective breeding.
Lifespan
Guppies generally live for around 2 to 3 years in an aquarium, although this can vary between individuals and according to their keeping conditions.
Never Release Guppies into the Wild
Guppies must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
