What Size Aquarium for Neon Tetras?
An aquarium of approximately 60 litres or more provides a suitable basis for keeping a shoal of Neon Tetras.
A planted aquarium with open swimming areas is particularly suitable and allows the fish to display their natural shoaling behaviour.
Behaviour and Shoaling
The Neon Tetra is a peaceful and highly sociable species. It should not be kept alone or in very small numbers.
A shoal of at least 10 individuals is recommended. When aquarium size allows, keeping a larger group is even better and creates a particularly attractive display.
Feeding
The Neon Tetra feeds naturally on very small invertebrates and other tiny food organisms.
In the aquarium, it accepts suitably sized micro-pellets and finely crushed flakes, as well as small frozen or live foods such as Artemia and Daphnia.
Breeding
The Neon Tetra is an egg-laying fish. The eggs are scattered amongst fine vegetation or over the substrate.
Breeding in the aquarium is possible but requires suitable conditions, particularly very soft water and subdued lighting.
Origin
Paracheirodon innesi originates from South America and is naturally found in the Amazon basin.
Lifespan
The Neon Tetra can live for approximately 5 to 8 years in an aquarium when kept under suitable conditions.
Conservation and Responsible Keeping
Paracheirodon innesi is not listed under CITES.
Neon Tetras must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
