An aquarium approximately 60 cm long provides a suitable basis for keeping a group. Plenty of vegetation combined with open swimming areas is particularly suitable for this species.
Floating plants and fine-leaved vegetation can also provide useful spawning sites.
Behaviour and Group Keeping
Oryzias woworae is a small, active and sociable fish. It is best kept in a group rather than individually.
A group of at least 8 to 10 individuals is recommended. When space allows, a larger group encourages more natural behaviour.
Feeding
In the wild, Oryzias woworae feeds on small invertebrates, larvae and other tiny organisms.
In the aquarium, it readily accepts a varied diet suitable for its small mouth, including micro-pellets, finely crushed flakes and small live or frozen foods such as Artemia and Daphnia.
Breeding
Oryzias woworae is an egg-laying fish with a particularly interesting spawning behaviour.
After spawning, the female may temporarily carry a cluster of eggs attached near her abdomen before gradually depositing them amongst vegetation or on other fine surfaces.
Dense vegetation or spawning mops can make the eggs easier to collect and improve the survival rate of the young.
Origin
Oryzias woworae is native to Indonesia. Its natural range is very restricted and is located on Muna Island, off south-eastern Sulawesi.
Lifespan
In an aquarium, Oryzias woworae can generally live for around 3 to 5 years when kept under suitable conditions.
Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild
Oryzias woworae must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
