Tateurndina ocellicauda – Peacock Gudgeon
The Peacock Gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) is a small freshwater fish native to Papua New Guinea. Its spectacular colouration makes it a particularly attractive species for planted aquariums.
Its body can display beautiful turquoise-blue tones combined with red, orange and yellow markings. A distinctive dark eyespot is visible near the base of the caudal fin.
Males generally display stronger colouration and more developed fins. Females are often slightly smaller and may develop a rounder abdomen, particularly when ready to spawn.
The specimens offered here are approximately 2 to 3 cm.
Adult Size
Tateurndina ocellicauda generally reaches approximately 6 to 7 cm as an adult, with males potentially growing slightly larger than females.
Water Parameters

What Size Aquarium for Peacock Gudgeons?
An aquarium at least 60 cm long provides a good basis for keeping this species.
A planted aquarium containing roots, rocks and several hiding places is particularly suitable. Small caves and sheltered areas are also useful, especially for allowing the fish to display their natural breeding behaviour.
Behaviour
The Peacock Gudgeon is generally a peaceful fish that can be kept as a pair or in a small group when sufficient space and hiding places are available.
Males can become territorial towards one another, particularly during breeding. Providing several shelters and enough space helps reduce competition.
It can live alongside other peaceful fish of a suitable size with compatible aquarium requirements.
Feeding
In the wild, Tateurndina ocellicauda feeds mainly on small invertebrates, insects and larvae.
In the aquarium, a varied diet is recommended. Small pellets can be offered together with frozen or live foods such as Artemia, Daphnia and suitably sized larvae.
Breeding
The Peacock Gudgeon is an egg-laying species. During breeding, the eggs are generally deposited inside a cave or sheltered cavity.
After spawning, the male guards and fans the eggs until they hatch. This interesting breeding behaviour can be observed in aquariums where suitable shelters are provided.
Origin
Tateurndina ocellicauda originates from Papua New Guinea in Oceania.
Lifespan
Under suitable aquarium conditions, the Peacock Gudgeon can live for approximately 5 to 6 years.
Never Release Aquarium Fish into the Wild
Tateurndina ocellicauda must never be released into a river, pond, lake or any other natural environment.
